The factory installed Bose unit in the Maxima is already good. Even the older Maxima's are great sounding with their Clarion units. Basically it should be replaced along with the speakers. That is if you want better sound imaging and maybe more boom. Now, if you have the Bose stereo, it'd be best to leave the speakers alone. Moreover, leave the whole thing alone. If you do want to improve it, just add a sub.

You can add virtually any CD changer to the Max with an RF Modulation unit. Many people bought their Maxima without the factory CD changer and want to add one. There is currently no changer available (other than the factory one) that can be added to take advantage of the built in controls.

There are a lot of alternatives for use connoisseurs looking truly remarkable life-like treble and bass reproduction for the connoisseurs. I recommend replacing your stock deck with high output unit like Pioneer or Sony with at least 30W of power to 4 channels to ensure ample power across the acoustic range. In order to make the best out of your new high powered deck, you'll need a little better capacity handling speakers. Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio, and MB Quartz are a few of the better known manufacturer of high fidelity speakers. Try and establish a front stage by putting 6.5" Separates in the front with the tweeters nearby for a more natural audio reproduction. As for the rear, I would recommend plugging in 6.5" Coaxials for rear "fill-in". Depending on how much you are willing to sacrifice your trunk space, subwoofers ranging from moderate to radical output ca be placed. I personally recommend the JL Audio 10" model CS210R-W0 mini-subs. These units provide great bass output without sacrificing the space usually associated with it. Of course, high output speakers, typically need high output amps. Be sure, to get a quality amp, from say Precision Power, Coustic, or simliar with outputs ranging from 100W to 200W for the subwoofers. You can also add another 4 channel amp to your the rest of your speaker components to ensure adequate volume without distortion. Lastly, remember that each individual speaker working in your audio system has a specific range of frequency to reproduce. Ensure that you have passive crossovers connected so that those lows won't go to your tweets and vice versa. You can always opt for an electronic unit to "dial in" your exact needs and specifications, but of course, those would run a little more in $$$$.

Here's a chart showing the sizes of speakers and depths for installation.

Crutchfield offers an ASTOUNDING kit! You can also install an equalizer in the bottom section too. If you get a full sized one (full-DIN), then you may need to cut a little bit, but hey, it works really nicely.

But, please note speaker sizes - you can have problems!

In the doors, there isn't a whole lot of depth, so you'll only have a 2" clearance before you start hitting the windows when they come down. Don't expect bass to come from your front set! Also, don't be fooled by the 6 1/2" opening either. You can only get a 5 1/4" speaker with less than a 2" depth. Sony makes one in their XS series of separates. The tweeter can be installed above.

The rear speakers are also a problem. The stabilizing bar for the trunk will limit what the heck you can put back there. I would suggest another set of 5 1/4" separates. You can get a set of Infinity speakers back there that sound astounding. You will need a file and use it to widen the space on those "boxes" that hold the OEM speakers. Again, watch your depth.

If you would like some lows, a box with subs or a bazooka tube should do the trick.

NOTE: You'll only be able to put amplifiers under the driver's seat, and only a small enough size. The cruise control computer is under the passenger seat. You may have to go into the trunk or see your custom car stereo specialist!
