Using EarthWeb Chat
1. Connecting to the EarthWeb Chat Network:
- Type your Name and Email address in the
boxes provided.
- Press the "Connect" button.
- If the Name is in use, choose another
one.
- To log on as your channel's administrator, press the
"Admin" button and enter your username/login name and
password in the box that appears. An admin window will
appear along with the regular chat window.
2. Once you're in a channel:
- To send a public message to all channel
users, type your message in the box at the bottom, and hit [Enter]
to send.
- To send a private message, select one
or more names in the list on the right, type in your message, then click
on the "Send privately" button.
- To change your name, type your new name
into the box at the top.
- To view another person's information,
double-click on a name in the list of names. Information will appear the
message window.
- You can ban users by site from your channel by highlighting
that user's name in the admin window and clicking the "ban
site" button.
- You can unban users from you channel by highlighting the
user's IP address in the "Currently Banned Sites" window
and pressing the "Unban Site" button.
3. Exploring other channels:
- To view a list of other channels, click
the "Channels" button.
- To view information about the channel,
select the channel from the list.
- Clicking "Jump to Channel"
connects you to the channel you've selected.
- Clicking "Jump to Page"
brings you to the page where the selected channel is hosted. You will have
to login again when you use this feature.
4. Float feature:
- Click the "Float" button
to launch a float the chat window outside the browser. Now you can browse
while continuing your chat session.
- To "Unfloat," you must
return to the origin site of the channel.
5. Follow URLs feature:
- To enable this feature, click on the box
next to "Follow URLs" in the main window so that a checkmark
appears.
- To send a page to all people who are following
URLs, type an address in the following format: http://www.earthweb.com.
- This will launch that URL in a new browser
on everybody’s screen.
- To disable this feature. click again on
the box to remove the checkmark.
6. To Disconnect:
- Click the "Disconnect:"
button to sign-off.
Known Bugs:
- The "Follow URLs" feature
may launch an empty browser window on Macintosh.
- Clicking on "Chat News"
may launch an empty browser window on Macintosh.
Troubleshooting:
- Make sure you are running a Java-enabled
browser.
- If you are not connecting, the server
may be down. You may want to try again in a few moments. If there is a
lag, our server may be under heavy pressure from too many simultaneous
users. These issues are being worked on for our next release.
