This was suggested to me, and now here it is! It covers any questions asked about early and late model Maxima's. Some of the answers provided didn't come from me, but you, the viewers of Maxima Net.

Q: Is there any recall for Maximas because of a fuel injection system problem?

A: It's true. I contacted Nissan(Dallas) and they confirmed that there's a voluntary recall on the Maxima due to a faulty fuel injector system. They will replace the injectors and lines to the injectors at no charge. This repair normally takes 3 days (but could take a lot longer!). If you haven't had your car repaired, I advise you to do this as soon as possible. Also, please note that not only do they change the fuel injectors and hoses, they also change the air pressure regulator - another $100 part that has an electrical sensor which goes out from time to time. Another thing to note is that once you are waiting for the precious parts to come, just keep on them because you shouldn't have to wait more than a month. This is for 85-88.

Q: Does Stillen Motor Sports offer any kits or other upgrades for the early Maximas?

A: No. Stillen only goes back as far as 1990. Unless you want to try some chop work.

Q: Can you recommend any CD changer to install in a 95 Maxima to hook-up with the factory installed Clarion cassette radio via the DIN connector in the back?

A: On the use net I found that there is a company called Peripheral Electronics (http://www.peripheral-aamp.com) that makes such a unit for $69.00 called the Smart Switcher p/n NISS95. I think this information worth posting on your web site.

The following is a cut out of the E-mail I found on the use-net.

I will try to answer your questions. The DIN input can be used with an after-market changer with the use of a Smart Switcher ( part # NISS95 ) from Peripheral Electronics. This is made specifically for Nissan radios WITHOUT changer controls. It will allow you to input an after-market source , with RCAs, into the DIN connection on the back of the radio. Smart Switchers provide noise free, automatic switching between the factory head-unit and the after-market source.

This includes single cd players, or changers with RCAs and some type of controller. Sony Uni-link changers can be used with the RF commander. You would simply plug the RCAs into the Smart Switcher instead of the RF convertor. We are currently in the process of making audio extraction cables for some of the more popular changers. This will make installation of other RF changers, ones without RCAs, much easier. Remember, we are using the RF changers only for the controls, the signal is a direct input, no FM modulation, into the factory radio.

Q: Are there any really expensive repairs common to earlier Maxima's?

A: It seems that the 1985-1988 Maximas are prone to excessive starter/flywheel wear. Everyone I have spoken to had the exact same problem. At about 100,000 miles or so, the starter will make an ugly noise when you turn the key to start the car. This is caused by the starter gear "missing" the flywheel during ignition. This sympton will get worse if not repaired. Some days it will work fine, but on others it will take several turns of the key to start the car.

Unfortunately, this repair is expensive and is best left to be done by a qualified Nissan dealer. The entire transaxle must be removed and involves about 10 hours of labor. I paid $680 for this repair. The good news is that my money was well spent. I had this done two years ago and I no longer had any problems!

Q: Has anyone else had a problem with power windows going out on a 1993 Maxima?

A: Yes. Yours is not the first 90s Maxima to have this problem. David Thomas had this to say: We have a '92 Maxima and are the original owners. We've had FIVE power window failures; one in each door and one door twice. I'm sick of fixing this. I have a friend that has the same model/year and has had a similar experience with multiple window failures. We were considering buying a new Maxima, but if this problem is not resolved... There are also other people who have not had any trouble with the windows.

Q: Anyone familiar with brake grab on 95 GXEs. Specifically mine will lock the FRONT right wheel under heavy braking. I can avoid the lockup with brake modulation. The car does not have ABS. BTW I have checked at least 2 other 95s and found the same problem. This is a great car but this problem really bothers me. None of the other wheels lock under heavy braking.

A: I don't know of any problems with the brakes on this year Maxima. Strange. Try bleeding your brakes, and if that doesn't help, have it looked at by a professional.
